Smart Door Hardware Giveaway

Everything is getting smarter these days, including home technology.  I must admit our home is definitely not the smartest (yes I manually adjust the thermostat every morning and night) so one of my goals for 2016 is to make small changes that will help our home work better and smarter.  When Schlage contacted me asking to try their new Schlage Sense^™ Smart Deadbolt I had to give it a whirl and bonus they are offering one lucky reader their own Schlage Sense^™ Smart Deadbolt and Handleset!

Look who's smart now?  I can control the deadbolt on my phone.  I can even have Siri do it for me with voice control!  No more fumbling with keys while my hands are full because my phone is usually in my hands anyways.   The Schlage Sense^™ Smart Deadbolt is designed to work with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.  And if you happen to have an Apple TV in the home remote capabilities are possible too.

Naturally you would most likely be standing outside to unlock the door but I was having too much fun playing with the app inside I snapped this picture.  The Bluetooth technology works up to about 40 feet in range from the door so you can unlock from the driveway with no problem.

W is for Wallpaper Wall Art Giveaway

Wallpaper makes an easy solution for adding pattern and texture to your wall and you don't have to wallpaper the whole wall either.  I was challenged by the folks at Porch.com to make something fun and creative using wallpaper for a pattern play project.  And I actually came up with two projects: wallpaper wall art and wallpaper flower bouquet.

If you're not familiar with Porch.com yet they are a home network with connections to accredited home improvement professionals.  It is a giant information source for all things home and DIY, definitely check it out!

Porch.com teamed up with Scout & Nimble to supply us with wallpaper and I choose this Graham & Brown Kensington English rose pattern:  

Originally I never planned on coloring the flowers however when the wallpaper arrived all the beautiful black and white hand-drawn details had me looking at this paper like a coloring book.

T is for Thompsons WaterSeal Giveaway

Ive been busy building for our outdoor space by adding 3 adult size adirondack chairs using the plans found in Ana Whites book The Handmade Home.  But no outdoor furniture is safe from the elements without some protection!

The folks at Thompsons® WaterSeal® sent me some transparent waterproofing stain in Maple Brown and theyre giving away 4 gallons of stain and deck cleaner to one lucky reader!

I used the transparent waterproofing stain in Maple Brown on my new adirondack chairs.  It gives a hint of color and a definite seal without being too thick.

I must admit I had some young helpers with the stain on this project  They were a little overzealous with the application so there are a few imperfect areas.  But I prefer to encourage my kids to participate in my DIY projects rather than be concerned about perfection.

The waterproofing stain is available in transparent, semi-transparent and solid - all in 5 color options.

You can see the Maple Brown is a warm light brown with a slightly yellow hue.  I used all pine boards for these chairs so the color may vary depending on your wood species.

Thompsons® WaterSeal® is made for outdoor wood protection so you can use it on furniture as well as decks.  Below is a before shot of an untreated deck:

And after staining with semi-transparent Maple Brown waterproofing stain (the railing is Acorn Brown solid):

You can see how the waterproofing stain not only prevents water damage and resists mildew and UV damage but also provides a fade resistant color.  How beautiful is that deck now?  (Note that is not my deck nor did I .) 

Now the adults can join the kids for marshmallow roasting!

Locker Cubbies Giveaway

I used the jig saw to make the stepped cuts and the arched cut out for the 3 step stool:

My preferred method to make straight cuts with the jig saw is to clamp down a straight edge making a fence for the saw to ride up against.  Above the wood has already been cut but you can see how having that straight edge clamped in place keeps control of the jig saw.
