The Best Wood Working Projects Start With a Plan

Not long ago I was a complete novice when it came to wood working.
What I quickly learned is that wood working projects are easy if you
start with a complete plan. It can often be harder to find a good plan
than it is to actually build an item.

Getting Started in Woodworking is Easy When You Have a Plan. I can
handle all the basic wood working tools, it’s just that I can’t
visualize and plan out my next great project. Sure, there are plenty
of things I want to build – a bench, sheds, desks and even toys. I
just didn’t know how to plan and design my project. My first project
was a storage bin. I ran to the hardware store and picked up the wood
and nails. Only to return later to buy more wood because I had made
incorrect cuts. It got even worse when I later discovered I was using
nails that were too long, I didn’t notice the nail went all the way
through the wood and I ended up with a nasty cut on my hand.

Not All Plans Are Created Equal. So I went on the internet looking for
some woodworking project plans that I could download. I found one site
that had several great plans. So I picked a plan for an awesome
looking magazine holder. Clicked the download button and found out
that this site that offers all these “free” plans wanted me to pay $18
for the project plan.

After more searching I found a site that really was offering free
plans but they lacked photos and detailed sketches. Let me tell you
that these are a must if you are looking to build anything,

Perfect Woodworking Plan: So what should you look for in a Wood
working project plan? Obviously easy to read sketches and photos of
the completed project are a huge requirement. A detailed material list
and a listing of the required tools should be included. It is also a
big help when the plan gives you the estimated time to complete the
project and offers some idea of the skill level required for the
project.

P is for Pincushion with Wood Base

diy quilted pincushion with wood base

quilted pincushion with wood base

This is one project I've been thinking about for a long time and finally put myself to the task while feeling quite under the weather this week to do much of anything else.

Raid your fabric scraps to make the cutest pincushion and then I'll show you how to attach it to a solid 4x4 wood base for stability and weight.  Anytime you can combine fabric and wood in a project is a win / win in my book!

The finished size on the squares is 3/4" but the whole pincushion measures about 4" square and just over 2" tall.

I posted these in my etsy shop here but I show you how to make your own down below.

Woodworking Projects should start with Safety

I spend so much time writing about woodworking projects that I
realized it is best to share some safety tips.  Maybe you are new to
woodworking, or maybe you’re a professional woodworker, in any case,
take time to think about safety!

Here are my woodworking safety tips to keep in mind:

Stop Before You Cut And Think – Sometimes you might get in a hurry or
get so used to a power tool that you sometimes make a critical mistake
that can lead to injury.  Always take your time when cutting and using
power tools.  Pay close attention to your hands and their location to
sharp blades.

A Clean Work Area is a Safer Work Area – Keep your area clean and you
are less likely to slip or trip.

Don’t Get Distracted – Never take your eye off your work, especially
when cutting with a power saw of any type.  If you notice someone come
into the room or hear someone call your name remain focused on your
cutting and only look up after you have finished.

Don’t Get Frustrated – Sometimes a project just isn’t going the way
you want and you may find yourself getting angry, which often leads to
rushing or taking shortcuts.  Take a short break to allow yourself to
get back in control of your emotions.

Don’t Force a Tool to do it’s Job – Ever had a saw that just didn’t
seem to be cutting through a piece of wood?  Many times the natural
reaction is to push it harder against the blade.  This can lead to
serious injury as often the wood will kickback causing you to fall
towards the cutting blade.  If it is not cutting stop what you are
doing and examine the problem to determine the reason for the trouble.

Use Protection – Eye protection should always be worn and in many
cases you should consider ear and possibly lung protection.  Always
make sure tool safety features are in working order before using a
tool.

Wear Correct Clothing – Loose jewelry, clothing or hair could get
caught and cause serious injury.  Think about what you are wearing
before starting your woodworking projects.

Get Some Air – Between sawdust and solvents the air can get pretty
bad while working on a wood project.  Try to keep the workshop
ventilated and the air moving.  Also take a break and get fresh air.

Use Your Brain – The most important safety item is your brain.  Use
it!  Take advantage of your own common sense and try to do your job
safely.

No woodworking project is worth getting injured over! Remember no
matter how small your woodworking projects are you can still injure
yourself. On the other hand being alter and paying attention means
that you can pick up woodworking projects for kids and help them learn
the joy of our favorite hobby.

L is for Loft Bed with Lego Storage Work Space

diy loft bed with lego storage and work space

A giant build to share with you today thank you to my fellow buildy blogger Jen at House of Wood, she put together the plans for this awesome loft bed with lego storage and work space!

My son was begging for a loft bed and I wanted to make the most use of the space below by designing the bed to fit 2 Ikea Trofast storage towers underneath for legos.  Plus a lego workspace where he can leave out his incomplete projects without cluttering up our Family Room.

The work space is very generous (the table here measures 32"w x 48"l),  Jen's plans make use of the whole width under the bed.  Our table is slightly narrower because I used a scrap piece of plywood and also it does leave a bit of space on the ladder side for feet to poke through.

I put felt on the bottom of the table legs so it easily slides out into the room for more maneuverability.

Woodworking Projects – Tips for working with long screws

Woodworking projects that require extra long screws means you have a
higher chance of the wood splitting and making even small woodworking
projects a major pain!  I’ve developed my own three step process that
greatly reduces the chance of this happening and I’m going to share it
here with you.

Step 1 – Counterbore:  Since I always cover the screws with wood plugs
the first step is to drill a counter bore sized to accommodate the
wood plug and the head of the screw.

Step 2 – Shank Hole:  The second step is to drill a shank hole.  Now
usually you only do this through the outside wood piece but what I do
is to clamp the two pieces together and drill the hole through the
outside piece and into the mating piece.  Remember to drill the shank
hole the depth of the unthreaded part of the screw, taking into
account the conterbore you made during the first step.

Step 3 – Pilot Hole:  This is the last step and you should leave the
pieces clamped together.  Keep in mind that unless you use an extra
long bit the pilot hole won’t be as deep as the screw.  So to play it
safe you can unclamp the pieces first and use a standard drill bit to
drill pilot holes the full depth of the screw.

This simple little three step process has made it easier when using
really long screws.  I discovered this when working on a simple
workbench for a mudroom.  I hope you found this tip useful and can use
it when doing your woodworking projects.
